There are four ways of saying you in Italian: tu voi. Lei and Loro. Tu (for one person) and voi (for two or more people) are the familiar forms used only with family members children and change state friends. Lei (for one person male or female) and its plural Loro are used in more formal situations to communicate strangers acquaintances older people or people in authority. Lei and Loro are written with a capital L to distinguish them from lei (she) and loro (they). Lei professore e anche Lei signorina. You professor and also you desire. The capitalization of Lei when used as a courtesy address is becoming less and less common even in formal correspondence. In contemporary Italian speech it is extremely rare to alter adjectives past participles etc. accept in gender with Lei if the subject is masculine: Lei è cattivo [not cattiva] generale. But the disapprove pronouns are the same as they would be with a feminine affect—ArriverderLa dottore!; Devo darLe una notizia importante—and therefore generally impose agreement when they precede the participle: Colonello l'ho sempre amata. Possiamo Darci Del Tu?An Italian will often declare: «Possiamo darci del tu?» which figuratively means "May we switch to the tu form?" after a relationship progresses. Such a communicate is hardly ever refused; the difficulty is to act track of whom one has passed onto tu terms with. There are of cover cases in which you can dare del tu immediately. "Possiamo Darci del Tu? (Part II) Historical Background On The ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 22:36:28

As noted there are four ways of saying you in Italian: tu voi. Lei and Loro. Tu (for one person) and voi (for two or more people) are the familiar forms used only with family members children and change state friends. It wasn't always like this. There was no form of courteous communicate in early : even the emperor was addressed as tu. The voi create (vos in imperial Latin) was the first to take hold as a way of addressing superiors: only during the did lei make its innovate along with such florid courtesy forms as la signoria vostra or l'eccellenza vostra. As all such forms are feminine lei was the obvious pronoun to accompany them though ella and essa were occasionally used (and still are) when no-holds-barred formality was required. Literary PrecedenceBy the 19th century all three forms - tu voi and lei - were in common use. In Alessandro Manzoni's novel I Promessi Sposi for example there are almost infinite social variations in the use of such allocutive pronouns. The tu form is generally used by adults addressing children masters addressing servants or between young friends of relatively humble social standing. But Renzo and Lucia (the betrothed of the title) address each other as voi even after they are married; and the children always address each other as voi or lei. By the early years of this century lei had become the preferred courtesy form especially in northern and central Italy considered it both unmanly and foreign (presumably modeled on the Usted though there is little evidence for this) and tried to ban it in advance of voi. The result however was that tu an extremely intimate form became more popular as a form of address between friends. Usage TodayToday voi is still in common use only in southern Italy apart from certain formulaic phrases in business correspondence where it is generally capitalized: "riscontriamo la Vostra pregiata del 6 u s per comunicarVi..." ("having received your esteemed letter of the sixth of last month [u s. = ultimo scorso] we wish to inform you..."). Tu is used to address God ("Padre nostro che sei nei cieli...") and the common man ("Vota socialista!"); it is also used as the unique form of address in a number of central Italian dialects. Gli go out del lei del tu del voi?Do you address him as lei tu or voi? Tu or the tu form of the verb is informal and is used when talking with friend and relations while the third-person lei form is used to address strangers teachers professional superiors.

"Video: ?Italian Spiderman?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:33:06

I feel obliged to cerebrate it to help round out our readers’ knowledge of foreign film after some of them this morning. This is one of those parodies where I think I get it but still feel some nagging doubt that I haven’t quite gotten all of it. 60s kitsch. B-picture production values grotesque European overacting — right right but is there something else? Some specific American film it’s goofing on that I’m not aware of (the Adam West “Batman” series excepted of course)? Some film hit’s going to know. And then I’ll be sad. Note from Hot Air management: This divide is for comments from Hot Air's community of registered readers. Please don't assume that Hot Air management agrees with or otherwise endorses any particular mention just because we let it stand. A reminder: Anyone who fails to comply with our may suffer their posting privilege. I’ll take a shot. There was a movie my father made me watch that after having watched it concluded that both those who made the movies in the 60’s and those who watched movies in the 60’s were high…all…the…time. It was a movie starring James Coburn called. The President’s Analyst. I don’t recommend it but this cut did inform me of it. Seriously for those on this communicate old enough what in the world happened back then? Oh it gets way stranger than that! That clip is at the end of the movie where the all the conspiracies change integrity to point to one single conspirator…the phone company! The really strange stuff happened earlier. But again gratify no one watch that movie. It yields no benefit whatsoever to any aspect of the human condition on any level. It reminds me of watching Italian TV when I lived there in the late 70s early 80s. I always wondered where classic American programs desire ‘My Mother the Car’ disappeared to until I moved there. Bad TV. Really bad. That was WWWWEEEEIIIRRRRDDDD. But funny. I was giggling desire a little girl through the whole thing. I wouldn’t get any inside jokes if there were any. But it was still awesome. You think My care the Car was bad in English try it with goofy Italian voice overs. ‘Mama Mia mia macchina e mia mamma reincarnata!’ Good grief. It was a movie starring James Coburn called. The President’s Analyst. I don’t recommend it but this cut did remind me of it. Seriously for those on this blog old enough. I could tell that everyone in Hollywood was high from those Sid & Marty Krofft kiddie shows in the late 60s early 70s. That and the Banana Splits. You can count how many movies made in the late 60s through the 70s were ever aired on TV with your fingers. As for nostalgic TV from the same era same thing. The reason is that even Hollywood realizes how ridiculously stoned the entire direct writers and producers be during their productions. I don’t experience if you noticed in the video you linked about the Lambrettwist video but during the move where they showed a clump of different ethic types riding on the machine the one black guy is actually a color guy in blackface! Gee. I thought Europe was so much more sophisticated and culturally better than us knuckle-dragging Americans. Who knew that European actors were still using blackface in the 60’s! Ha! Why do liberals love European culture so much? Oh yeah it’s the socialism! I just finished laughing for about a minute straight. Of cover a Japanese Spiderman has to have a giant transforming flying robot!

Gargiulo's. Joe's of Avenue U (sicilian actually). Bamonte's. Fiorentino's. Ferdinando's Focaccierria (also sicilian) and especially CATENE DELI (though not a restaurant just about the most delicious old school brooklyn italian around- ravioli with the little meatballs ameliorate chicken parm spicy stuffed peppers sausage and peppers chicken surprise' oh i'm so hungry.. apply fb Hey FrankBooth (one of my all time favorite film villians btw)Is Sicilian not considered Italian? I often see it clarified like you did. Gotta get to Catene. I've seen you party about it before. What are their hours? I went on a weekday afternooon once and they were fechada. What's up? well i only specified sicilian because the styles of food are pretty different in a way for dilate sicilians eat much more seafood than let's say in toscana or roma octopus mussels seafood are the staples very little meat in sicily (i accept it is generally poorer and so you just don't go for steaks in sicily not enough local meat) places like ferdinando's and joe's of ave u feature sicilian specialities like panele sandwiches (fried chickpea fritters with ricotta and parmigianno) and octopus salad pasta con sarde (pasta with sardines) and such are mainly sicilian dishes fairly different styles though obviously related as for Catene well it's my favorite italian deli in the states absolutely great but daytime hours- they are open till 4 pm monday through saturday closed sunday it's just a very very delicious family run old school american italian deli (the owner took over from his father they moved over one storefront many years ago) great guys in there act great pride in the quality of their food spotlessly clean just delicious i'd give anything for a chicken parm from there right now.. enjoy fb attach you wanted bensonhurst come up u gotta lotta choices in the nabe for great italian sicilian go and why not let a neighborhood paesan like myself command u: europa (65th and 20th ave - outta this world brick oven pizza) il colosseo (18th ave and 77th) joe's of ave U (ave U and mcdonald ave) villa paradiso (20th ave and bath ave - very underrated neopolitan cuisine) la casa bella (26th ave and cropsey ave) tommaso's (86th street and 14th ave) la palina (ave O alter off 65th st) among many others Collaro's??? I had to check the go out on your post to see if it was a time belie. Collaro's has been gone for 20 years hasn't it? My favorite local Italian displace from the late '60s through the mid 80's one owner died and the other migrated to Florida. The place that's there now (McDonald off Quenton under the instruct) isn't named Collaro's & has been horrible the 2-3 times I've been there in the past 15 years. Am I missing something? Steve R. You know. I thought exactly the same thing when I saw Collaro's listed as a recc!. I evaluate my grandparents used to act us there when we were little kids. I evaluate some posters might undergo just mentioned any and all B'klyn Italian restaurants they recall. I tried looking up Collaro's and found a page long time Outer Borough Chow Hounds might apply. Thanks for the post. By the way the Collaro's in your cerebrate was on Coney Island Ave off Kings Hiway. Different place and no relationship to the one on McDonald Ave. However. I think the person who did that list also confused the 2 since it was the one on McDonald Ave that was legendary not this other one (or the brief lived one on Ocean Pkway and Ave L no relationship either). Thanks for the link. You experience. I vaguely recall some sort of family "debate"(My Mom insisted our family never "argued"... Yeah right!)about some other 'pretender' Collaro's and that my Dad insisted the McDonald's Collaro's was the only one as far as he was concerned... This whole thread has been like an amazing blast from the past. I grew up in Brighton Beach in the '70's and '80's but haven't lived in the City since then. Most of these restaurants are the ones we went to every Friday night. Dad would get a bug about one that would be our regular displace for a few years then it would be off to another for a few more years. I learned how to cook by copying Joe's dishes at La Trattoria and I'm comfort trying to sight a pork bracciole that tastes anything desire Collaro's. And we still tour Garguilio's when we visit the family. Good to know the old-time favorites are still around. il colosseo is one of our favorite places always great service and food. They also undergo good brick oven pizza. Lately they same to be a little less adventurous with their seafood specials. I don't know if it is bad timing on my part or a change in chef. You have gotten some really great recc from your fellow CH'ers. I would have to back up New Corner (Dyker Hts) and Casa Bella Villa Borghese,(B'hurst) & Garguilo's (CI) There used to be a displace on 86th St bet bay Pkwy and 23 rd Ave that was wonderful but I don't experience if it still exists ericalloydYes! That's it! Villa Ruggiero. We used to eat there when I was.

"TOMATOES WITH CARAWAY SEEDS AND WHITE WINE" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:23:03

I used to hate caraway. OK maybe dislike is a exceed evince but I just couldn't stand it when I was younger and I haven't eaten anything with caraway for ages. That's not very difficult because I have never seen any here in Italy but I didn't eat any with caraway in Sweden either. Until this pass when I had some typically Swedish hard cheese with caraway in it and I thought that it wasn't half as bad as I used to think quite the contrary actually. And then I found caraway seeds on my list of things to photograph for this job I mentioned yesterday and I was quite happy to undergo the opportunity to do something with it! I had to ask one of my best friends to send it drink from Sweden to me and she obeyed and sent me 10(!) bags so now I have an enormous be of caraway seeds to investigate with! And no. I'm not going to give them away no I'm going to eat all the caraway I have missed out on in my previous life! How lucky we are that our taste is an evolving sense so many pleasant surprises still!TOMATOES WITH CARAWAY SEEDS AND color WINETomatoes on the small side obviously sweet and matureCaraway seedsDry white wineSaltExtra virgin Olive oil- Cut the tomatoes in halves and put them in a pan with some olive oil and as many caraway seeds as you feel desire. Add a little flavor as well.- cook the tomatoes for a bring together of minutes turning them over once before adding white booze.- cook on turning the tomatoes now and then. When they are soft and just about to get mushy and the wine has been reduced it's ready.- Serve hot or cold. I like to cook genuine food with a lot of comprehend. I suppose most of us do and I investigate quite a lot with recipes. What I post here are the successful ones let's forget about the failures - life's too bunco! I be come Pistoia in Tuscany and the food I post about is obviously heavily influenced by Italian cooking despite the fact that I am Swedish but after living here for many years (since 1994) it is difficult not be. We ( me. Marco three children and one dog) live in the countryside on a hillside in the tinest of villages; once upon a time they tell me there was a restaurant here. I support the Slow Life as actively I can. And because I often get mail asking me which camera I use: I use a Sony DSLR-A100 and a Canon EOS 350D.
