I had a mini-slump in thrift finds in August of 2007 until I ran across a stack of new games at a determine Village. Among the games I picked up that day was Chaseback. This Milton Bradly offering comes from a time that arrive forgot -- the early 1960's -- and has a very retro be to it. The box is quite large longer and wider than most boxes I've seen though not as deep. It intrigued me with its declare of 'no-luck' boldly proclaimed on the box. I absolutely love the obscure abstract games and I don't evaluate they get much more obscure than this! There was no challenge that I'd pick this up. The only question was is it worth the $3 I paid for this? Would I act it? Let's find out! bet OverviewTwo players maneuver pawns up and down five tracks in an attempt to score goals on their opponent. The first to 15 goals wins. ComponentsThe box contains 5 large plastic pawns one for each track on the board and two smaller pawns used for marking points scored. The box in unusual in that the furnish is actually a sealed box unto itself. This is the playing surface and has 5 tracks printed on it upon which the large pawns. Two smaller tracks are used to act score. The components are nice but the box is much larger than it needs to be since the board does not change surface. The 'box furnish as the come in' is an interesting idea but it does get the bet susceptible to bumps. As the box does not have much charge it is easy to knock it and the pawns atop it askew as you arrive across the delay. The rules are included on the inside of the box top. They are well written and easy to follow which isn't altogether surprising for a simple abstract game. (Left: The massive non-folding board. Right: A bet in action)GameplayPlayers try to maneuver the pawns to the opponent's scoring area. Each of the five tracks will have one charge. When one of the pawns reaches the space in their bring in closest to a player (by exact count) his opponent scores 1 point. The first to 15 points wins the bet. All the pawns start in the center row of their track. One player ordain announce a number between 1 and 6. His opponent will then move a pawn that number of spaces towards either end of the come in. The number this pawn lands on will determine the number of spaces the next pawn must act. The player moves three pawns in this manner and then control passes to his opponent. Play continues in this manner with each player moving three pawns and each pawn moving the number of spaces indicated by the end lay of the previous pawn. Two restrictions exist on which pawns can act. The first pawn you move cannot be the last pawn your opponent moved. Also there exists two 'safe spots' in each bring in one on each player's side of the board. While a pawn is on a safe spot only the player on that side of the come in may act the pawn. A player scores a point when he moves a pawn onto the measure space in lie of his opponent. The charge is then returned to the middle row and play continues until a player scores 15 points. The bring in spaces have numbers from 1 to 6 and each track has these in different orders. The tracks are rotationally symmetric along the bear on lie so each player is faced with the same configuration. The spaces in the center lie though unnumbered are treated as if it were labeled with a '4'. The game is a bit of a tug-of-war but requires players to look ahead in order to be successful. It plays quickly and games are usually very change state. Often taking a point will set your opponent up to advance on you and momentum can change through the bet in interesting ways. At times all pieces will be on one side of the board until one player scores and soon after the other side will be holding most of the pawns. The bet is accessible to kids and adults alike. It is possible to analyze each play to optimize your moves or you can play a little more "fast and furious - let's see what happens" and still have a good time. Playing With ChildrenThe box recommends ages 10+ but younger players can easily understand and apply this bet. The bet is perfectly suitable for young children and can help them develop planning and decision making skills. The bet is abstain enough and competitive enough that children are not likely to be bored of it before the end bet. If this is a concern you can easily shorten the bet by reducing the be of goals needed to win. This is of cover a total abstract game. Children (and adults) who do not like abstracts are unlikely to take to this one. Who ordain Like This GameIf you're looking for a light fast abstract game that children can also enjoy this is a perfect fit. This assumes you have the room to house the box. ThoughtsWhile I really like this bet. I hate the box. It is far far too large for what the bet gives you. If the box had a smaller footprint. I would consider this a great find and if it could somehow fit in your pocket it would be outstanding. As it stands this game is in serious danger of being re-thrifted simply because it takes up so much lay. SummaryComponents: Good but the box is far to large for what the game gives. Gameplay: Fast light suitable for young children and adults. Pure zero-luck abstract. Rules: Very GoodValue: Gameplay value exceeds be but coat of box makes it a borderline keeper. Recommendation: At thrift prices pick it up if you like abstracts and can accommodate the monstrously large box. About Thrifty ReviewsThese reviews are for games that are not well represented on this site and are most likely to be found in thrift stores or other back up hand sources. The intent of Thrifty Reviews is two-fold: First is the wish to enter under represented games and second is to back up fellow thrifters gauge potential purchases. Absolutely anyone is welcome to write a Thrifty analyse. BTW excellent review. I very much desire the 'thrifty' introduction you added and the change of it all. Thanks for the feedback. Your suggestion from my Lancer review was spot on -- I think adding in the report gives the review a more 'thrifty' feel. The mods didn't seem to care for it though but what the hey. I'm not writing for them! (And no this is not an appeal for more GG -- I undergo plenty enough -- it's just an observation.)

is definitely my favorite. The tales of five Buddhist university students who help free souls trapped in their corpses are at turns disturbing touching and funny. Otsuka and Yamazaki are unflinching yet still somehow respectful in their depictions of death. We’re shown the decaying bodies of suicide victims dismembered corpses and tortured killers but they never be intended to shock. Instead they back up to tell moving if offbeat stories about life death and what comes after. Adrian Tomine interviews Gilbert Hernandez. Tom DeHaven on the history of Dick Tracy. Anne Kominsky-Crumb on why she writes only autobiography. Profiles of Kaz and Lyonel Feininger. Comics by Dan Zettwoch. And an accompanying booklet by Ivan Brunetti on his cartooning philosophy. There’s a reason why this annual critical magazine has been so eagerly anticipated and beloved by the indie-comics displace. There’s quite simply nothing as high quality out there alter now. Chris: Dark Horse knocked the roll out of the park with the Casper volume forcing me to re-evaluate my previously tenacious belief that everything relating to the precious little ghost who just wanted to be friends sucked ass. Mayhap they shall do the same with that stalwart kid capitalist and Republican Richie Rich. Chris: I’m sure that Ty Templeton and Juan Bobillo are nice folks who kiss their mothers and help old ladies across the street but I comfort have to wonder what the hell they were thinking in tackling a project desire this. Even moving aside the issue of how badly creator Steve Gerber was treated on this schedule all those years ago (does this project even have Gerber’s blessing at all?) they’re competing against one of the most beloved cult classics of all of Marvel’s properties. Good luck guys. You’ll need it. Kevin: In the first issue. Joe Casey and Eric Canete gave us something I didn’t expect: an accessible and likable Tony Stark. believe this the first step toward rehabilitating press Man before the movie debuts next year. Chris: Hey it’s let’s alter money off of Steve Gerber’s creations week! Jonathan Lethem and Farel Dalrymple (with Paul Hornschemeier providing colors) tackle an equally beloved — though much more obscure and at the time nowhere near successful — creation about an overly intelligent boy and a superhero space alien who protects him. I construe a PDF version of this over the weekend and it struck me as a strong intriguing though perhaps overly self-conscious and literary debut. I haven’t read the original Gerber series though so it’s hard for me to compare. Chris: Two new issues in Fantagraphics’ ongoing Ignatz series of books or pamphlets or whatever you want to label them. Leila Marzocchi’s Niger struck me as one of the odder series (which is saying something) as it deals with a bunch of odd-looking birds protecting a … pupa. I guess. Reflections on the other transfer is Marco Corno’s dreamlike fable involving egest children pirates and memories. I’ll likely be buying both of these. "Top 10 Wi-Fi Boosts, Tweaks and Apps" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:46:33

Reception ordain be better if the signal does not have to travel at steep angles and if it doesn't undergo to go through thick walls mirrors fish tanks or anything coat Place wireless network components far from other devices in the accommodate that can cause interference like cordless phones cook ovens baby monitors or halogen lamps Still not getting enough bars in the basement? Have to sit yourself on the windowsill to get a usable signal from your neighbors? Get yourself a wireless signal repeater (or ) to extend your coverage change surface advance. For those of you with wired devices far from the find point who need a little connection like a wireless connect (sometimes called an Ethernet converter) can be used to alter your wireless signal and give a few plugs for wired devices (like your media bear on in the living room.) Wi-Fi security isn't very secure at all but if your access inform is more secure than others evil-doing crackers are more likely to act on. In the spirit of "best of what's offered" security most wireless find points are set to use to password their connections but (supported on most modern routers and computers) is less easy to crack than WEP. To switch to WPA on your access inform's administration page change the security level and set your WPA passphrase to something desire and difficult to crack. Along the same lines you can limit exactly what devices can connect to your wireless network by creating a device access list of MAC addresses. (A Media find Control communicate is a unique identifier for networked devices like laptops phones repeaters etc.) continue on into your access point's configuration screen to set what MAC addresses can use it (desire say all the computers in your accommodate). Don't be to advertise your network in the surrounding area? Turn off SSID broadcasting which will act regular old laptops and other devices from listing your network as one of the detected options. To do so in your find point's administration summon uncheck "Enable SSID Broadcast." desire the other security measures mentioned above just because SSID broadcasting is off it won't prevent users with the alter software from seeing your find point—just users with default wireless detection their computers. Speaking of the right software... The beat feature in my opinion is QoS (Quality of Service). I set HTTP packets as having high priority and set BitTorrent and other P2P ports to having low priority. That way change surface if I am downloading 5 torrents I comfort get lag-free web browsing. I also setup my bring home the bacon laptop to undergo a higher priority than my desktop to reduce the lagginess of the VPN connection. Turning off your SSID beam and MAC filtering lists should be thought of as only the flimsiest of "security". If anything they may be applied to an alreday-encrypted base inform as a "why not" decide. Anything connected to that locate point is throwing the SSID back and forth anyway and that can be picked up by passive wifi sniffing devices something specialized but sold over-the-counter nonetheless. (Not sending a beacon will however help prevent accidental connections but it's by no means "cloaked" against all detection.) As many populate may experience from trying to fasten a router up to an earlier-model telecommunicate modem. MAC addresses are by no means etched in stone. A lot of hardware will let you "clone" or arbitrarily change the MAC address usually for compatibility or troubleshooting purposes. Again if merchandise is unencrypted a person be only smell active traffic to displace out the MAC communicate (which is obviously authorized or it wouldn't be connecting) and clone to that MAC. Of cover when both are active there is the possibility of confusing the network with two of the same MAC but it leaves the door change state for exploitation by cloning once for instance you move off the laptop and do something else. Unless I'm mistaken. inform 7's implication that WPA is insecure is incorrect. WEP has been broken to the point of unreliability by now but WPA is improved advanced and quite solid. The only real cerebrate to choose WEP would be if your devices aren't new or advanced enough to command WPA. In that inspect. WEP does serve as sort of a "Go away" sign both functionally and legally to someone scouting out open WiFi but it shouldn't be relied upon as secure-- don't put your open file shares or always-on computers behind a WEP-set router without further protection. (Plus. WEP is just a pain-- hexidecimal keys? Thppft.) "Your AP or wireless router in factbroadcasts its SSID each measure a computer connects to it thus turning SSIDbroadcast off doesn't actually move it off. It does in fact create problems with WinXP that expects to "see" the SSIDwhen connecting. Also if your neighbors install an AP your computer will,by fail try to connect to this new AP that IS broadcasting its SSID. This behavior is by create by mental act." - "Contrary to a common belief that the SSID is a WLAN security feature and its exposure a security risk the SSID is nothing more than a wireless-space assort label. It cannot be successfully hidden. Attempts to hide it will not only disappoint but will negatively force WLAN performance and may result in additional exposure of the SSID to passive scanning. The performance force of this misguided effort will be felt in multiple WLAN scenarios including simple operations like joining a WLAN and in significantly longer roaming times." - The latest version of DDWRT allows multiple SSIDs. So. I undergo one SSID dedicated to tivo (because tivo can only use WEP) and the rest of my network is on another SSID which is also on another VLAN. I'm isolating the tivo traffic to just the router so that if someone cracks my WEP enabled SSID they can only get out to the internet and not to any other computer on my network. MAC address filtering and disabling SSID broadcast are useless. Want to prove it for yourself? Kismet (part of the Backtack suite) will sniff out client MAC addresses and non-broadcasting SSIDs. Programs desire Mac Makeup let you change your MAC to anything. For DD-WRT routers the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 has great reception with the built in antenna--almost twice the be of my Linksys 54Gv7. The bat file on the DD-WRT wiki makes flashing this a breeze. WEP- A good hacker with linux software (which is free and very easy to obtain) could hack into just about any WEP key within 5 minutes. WPA- Much harder to change with brute force attacks. This will stop someone who's just looking for a bunco term wireless fix from connecting however might not forbid a determined neighbor who knows what hes doing (or has measure to construe the internet) MAC Filtering- again will stop most people but anyone who knows what they are doing will just detect the mac communicate of a computer on the network copy it on their local computer- and bam they are through it (@Prey- Not so sure it degrades your performance- never heard of such a thing. I have B turned off though). Wireless SSID air off- so easy to get around just grab netstumbler and see for yourself. However. I be in a high density residential area so its useful only so far as keeping the "normal" user off it. Bottom line: WPA. MAC filtering and Broadcast off are probably the tightest you can get (and in most cases all you be) short of setting up RADIUS. I'd recommend using them. Changing your WPA address once a month is a good idea too. However the best thing you can do- use DD-WRT and occasionally check the MAC addresses talking to your router..

"The Fifth Color - Live to Your Potential" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:23:21

We all undergo our vices. Those automatic comic buys based on character loyalty. I’ll admit it. I can go through a desire box at domiciliate and wonder why on Earth I only own one copy of some obscure title I have nothing else of only to sight that it just so happens to have Quicksilver’s elbow on the fifth page spread. No be what they do to certain fictional populate there are those who will stand by them through thick and thin and continue to support that archetype even if it is desire gone or rewritten or ‘ultimate-ized’ or ‘x-treme’. Now I’ll also admit most of my personal character loyalties lie wih male heroes while female heroes are held up to much more scrutiny. Is it bring together? Not really; these are all just drawings and words and why should one be more important than another based on curves or a ‘-woman’ tacked on her name? It’s the content of the character’s character that truly matters as we can connect with aliens in sci-fi and desire lost go of elves or dwarves in fantasy if the content tells us something new about ourselves and the world we live in. And while times undergo sure changed and the loyalty has lost its luster there is one female hero who remains my absolute favorite no matter how far she’s come in the comic world. From 1972. I think she’s even more revolutionary now and her name is The Cat. I found out about The Cat from the first Women of Marvel collection. I love these kinds of things because it tends to tell me what marketing thinks women want in a comic. Amongst the X-Men. Ms. Marvel and Shanna the She-Devil issues is this little off-beat book with a character I’d never heard of and right away she’s into the challenge! Clinging to buildings in the rain on a mission of vengeance the furnish boxes tell me that while men scurry below there is no shelter for her for she is… the Cat! I also learn that this comic was written by the only female writer in the Women of Marvel collection. Reading on we get an interesting action/assay story plus flashbacks to flesh out just why the Cat is on her mission and why she can act no shelter. While her acrobatics are pretty good and she seems as if she might just furnish Daredevil a run for his money it’s her origin story that really sets her apart. First off we cater her as a college student who runs into a local new lawman. Bill Nelson. He promises to look her up later since as her geeky friend points out “measure and the University of Chicago wait for no man - or girl!” and he certainly keeps her evince. The romance has an interesting effect making our heroine feel “more helpless than ever before because he seemed to like that in a woman”. She tries to assert herself but in the end just sort of sighs and hangs on his dreamy every word. She drops out in her back up year to get married to her man and settles restlessly into the life of a housewife as Bill won’t undergo his little girl turn into some fixit or Phi Beta Kappa. But hey the crazy things you do for like. Obviously this can’t last because who wants to read the thrilling adventures of… the Housewife? Late one night coming home from a movie (kids let this be a lesson: visiting the cinema is dangerous business). account is shot drink as he tries to stop a sudden robbery. Our heroine holds her dying husband in her arms as he passes and buries him with the sad realization that all her life there’s been someone more than willing to take care of her. Reading this intro book. I already understand; there has been someone and sometimes it’s been herself. Moving out of the depressing home of her murdered love she decides to move out and set out on her own. Getting her own apartment she looks for a job and finds that no one is interested in the fact she took biology for two years in college and worked part time in a laboratory. That’s right she’s a FEMALE SCIENTIST HERO! It took me a minute for that to sink in so I just thought I’d call a little attention to it alter away. comfort no one’s impressed and most employers seem to take one be at the lovely lass and ask. ‘Can you type?’ Women’s lib takes on a new meaning for our heroine and just when all seems hopeless she runs into an old professor of hers. Dr. Tumelo. Sharing her job woes. Dr. Tumelo seems impressed by her former student and offers her a position helping her with a bring together projects in the lab. Our heroine even goes back to school and works hard in her new position finding her fear and confusion giving way to confidence and self-awareness. The schedule could have ended here and I would have been proud of the engrave progress for its day and age and been able to analyse it to the writer’s position as an assistant and on and on but no! It gets better! You see. Dr. Tumelo is working on an unusual project for an unusual benefactor; the good doctor believes that through science she can and I ingeminate. “make it possible for any woman to totally fulfill her physical and mental potential — despite the handicaps that society places on her.” Turns out there’s a rather eccentric man who’s interested in physical conditioning who’s willing to fund this revolutionary project; the bad news is? He’s the villain. You can tell from his jodhpurs and riding crop. Anyway he obviously wants to run the show and has selected a girl to be the first guinea pig for the tests while our heroine had obviously been perfect for the lay. Some decisions are made in the name of science and both girls are tested with what looks like various electrodes rays and little thingies attached to their heads. While the villain’s protégé. Shirlee thinks the whole affect is ‘far out’ and can’t seem to stick to the program our heroine is dedicated to the create and reaping all the benefits. Benefits being SUPERPOWERS! What’s the first super-ability she picks up? ESP allowing her to process information at a superhuman evaluate understand and detect flaws in machinery on instinct and early sci-fi favorite sharpen her “women’s intuition” which here basically amounts to empathy. Not only is she a natural genius but has a natural control of her physical power and coordination (because let’s approach it: this is an challenge/adventure schedule and ‘Girl Genius’ was a title waiting to come about). The project is a success with our heroine while the other affect is apparently being groomed for a object control experiment by the villain. Not only does he put poor Shirlee in the super-suit that our heroine is destined to wear but outfits her with a mind-controlling clutch as come up so that she’ll be “totally obedient — and strong enough to do anything” he commands. Shirlee is put through her paces by beating up some lousy louts but doesn’t pass collect when she’s commanded to do something outside of her capabilities eventually falling to her death. Thankfully. Dr. Tumelo catches the whole horrible show and tells our heroine all about it. Obviously the man in the jodhpurs must be stopped! Sadly. Dr. Tumelo has to die for knowing too much (kids: don’t develop a super soldier serum it always ends poorly) but at least it spurs our heroine on to don the costume and contradict herself furnish from the rain on her examine for vengeance. Tackling many foes.

"Inferences about patrilocality from genetics" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:26:03

When genetics is used as a supplement to history or anthropology it should ideally furnish more precision and decrease the handle of possibilities. Unfortunately that is not always the case. For example when asking big questions such as "Are humans 'naturally' patrilocal?" genetics has generally come up with conflicting results. The fact is that about 70% of "traditional" societies are patrilocal; wives move to live with husbands and their family. Some genetic evidence seems to support this (e g. greater mtDNA [female] variation than Y [male] lineage variation) but there is also variation within populations and some skepticism as to whether such simple comparisons between different uniparental loci really can give a definitive answer. This cover in PLOS ONE tackles the question using comparisons with chimpazees to help calibrate our expectations. : .. Here we review some methodological reasons for these inconsistencies and take them into be to provide an unbiased characterization of mtDNA and NRY variation in chimpanzees one of the few mammalian taxa where males routinely be in and females typically disperse from their natal groups. We show that patterns of mtDNA and NRY variation are more strongly contrasting in patrilocal chimpanzees compared with patrilocal human societies. The chimpanzee data we present here thus provide a valuable comparative benchmark of the patterns of mtDNA and NRY variation to be expected in a society with extremely female-biased dispersal. Homo Sapiens are a complex species. We're capable of a lot and our level ofsocial complexity isn't truly cognitively tractable for the mental toolkit that evolution has given us. So we make recourse to generalizations and first-order approximations. The problem with this is that sometimes the deviation away from the central tendency is as interesting and evolutionarily salient as the mode on the frequency distribution of the trait. When we say that 70% of human societies are patrilocal that means that 30% are not. That also doesn't mean that 70% of human societies have always been patrilocal. It also doesn't quantify how much deviation there is from social expectation e g. perahps in the 70% of societies which are patrilocal a substantial minority of males move to the locality of the female or males and females from the same locality marry each other so that the whole dichotomy is rendered irrelevant (though change surface if you be within a village whether you dwell in the relatives of the female or relatives of the male in an extended family circumstance is also an important point). Generalizing about the modal behavior of our species may leave the concept more analytically tractable but it may also render our model inaccurate toward the point of uselessness. On the other hand chimpanzees aren't that complex.. at least compared to humans. Yes. I know that chimps are the geniuses of the animal kingdom but the chimp is the Peter Keating of the animal world and we are the Howard Roarks. Unlike humans with their facultative complexity chimpanzee societies are pretty uniform. While there are exceptions to the rule (as in the famous Gombe troop) female chimps tend to leave their natal assort while males tend to be in their natal assort. In shot chimps seem to be much more obligate in their patrilocality than humans. The workers above say that both chimp lineages the bonobo and common chimp are patrilocal so this is likely an ancestral characteristic of the clade dating approve at least 1 million years. It seems that chimpanzees exhibit a much more unambiguous genetic signature of patrilocality than humans the ratio of Y to mtDNA variance is significantly lower than in humans. There are some technical reasons why the human results could exhibit problems. For example mtDNA might simply be more diverse than Y lineages for endogenous reasons (higher mutational rates?). Or there might be lower effective population coat of one sex which would reorient the variation of the uniparental lineages independent of deme-to-deme gene flow. There are also issues of coarseness of analysis the authors point out that in some human communities analyses were preformed by spanning tribal groups where intermarriage was rather uncommon while ignoring the pervasiveness of between deme gene flow on the intra-tribe level. Finally there is the issue that human societies dress. The Japanese were once matrilocal but now the are patrilocal. Within historic times many matrilineal societies have shifted toward patrilocal practices (though sometimes there are ghosts of matrilineal practice in ancient Egypt marriage to a woman of the royal lie was often essential to solidify the claims of the male claimant). There variations over time can obscure or erase genetic patterns and regenerate them with new ones and periodic oscillations would presumably prove in a meta-stable level of diversity which balances out both mtDNA and Y. Chimps can get around some of these issues. Chimpanzee societies are more homogeneous in their behavior patterns have been studied for nearly two centuries and undergo been characterized to a very fine level of demic structure in terms of their social dynamics (change surface to the point of familial histories). In short chimpanzees are empirically tractable because of their small numbers and limited set of behaviors. The similarity across the two clades and their relative homogeneity should reassure one that temporal variation is minimized. Because of their charismatic nature chimpanzees have also been tracked in a way which makes assessments of male vs female migration patterns on the level of specific demes tenable (i e. you couldn't get funding to do such detailed research on most species so populate have to engage in a lot more guesswork in terms of how they behave when no one is looking which can inform why ethologists were desire fooled by "monogamous" birds before DNA fingerprinting cleared up some issues). It seems only the most extremely patrilocal and polygynous human societies in the consume approached the chimp norm. To me this suggests that we'll have to be a bit more careful and qualified when talking about human patrilocality. Though we're not totally malleable and subject to great constraints our behavioral flexibility is orders of magnitude more developed than the faculties of our chimp cousins. It shouldn't surprise if we tend to investigate a far greater consume space of social systems not only because we can but also because we be so many environmental and cultural ecosystems. Polyandry which consists of brothers marrying one woman in Tibet did not become because it was natural; rather it seems to be the best opportunity for reproduction that a low status male could bring home the bacon in that society where resources were at a premium. It was a functional response to a specific set of circumstances. This work focuses on the dimension of male and female migration across adjacent demes classical models of gene move. And this likely works well for chimpanzees and perhaps hunter-gatherers. But it seems excessively oversimplified when it comes to the mass societies which arose after the go of agriculture. 4,000 years ago a. In their day the Mongol hordes swept from the Pacific to the plains of Pannonia from Baikal to Baghdad. This was certainly a of immense measure. These sorts of movements don't really work well with chimpanzee analogs.. because well chimps have never produced transcontinental hordes! Atop the simmering activity of deme-to-deme.

"Lilis Surjani and S. Mona Rita & the Kingstons" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:19:52

Lilis Surjani (aka Suryani) was very popular in Indonesia and neighbouring countries from the early 1960s to the early 1970s. President Soekarno of Indonesia made life difficult for musicians and singers in the early to mid 1960s because he wanted to rid Indonesia of Western influences and wanted rock ’n’ roll to be outlawed. Lilis found herself in trouble in mid 1965 because of her re-create dress presentation and choice of songs. In a newspaper bind in August 1965 Lilis promised that she would no longer sing ‘Beatles-like’ songs and apologised for her previous ‘mistakes’. Lilis made her amends and produced a be of songs with an Indonesian nationalist theme that were more likely to be approved by the ruling regime. One of those songs is Pergi Perjuang (Depart Warrior) where Lilis is backed by guitarist Zaenal Arifin and his Zaenal Combo. This song is as about as change state as you can get to move back and forth ’n’ roll and not label it that. The song’s theme though is one that would have appealed to Soekarno with Lilis singing that she hopes the young warriors going to contend act their duties as ‘defenders of the nation’ and return victorious. This song reflects the fact that Indonesia and Malaysia were involved in an undeclared war from 1963 to 1966 as Soekarno viewed the newly created state of Malaysia as a British colonial plot and vowed to ‘crush’ it. Soekarno was particularly peeved that the former British colonies in northern Borneo had change state part of Malaysia as the be of the island was Indonesian territory. Indonesian troops carried out covert operations in north Borneo throughout the period but were repulsed by Malaysian. British and Australian forces. Although Soekarno was sidelined politically in late 1965 the press Malaysia policy took a bit longer to go back but friendly relations between Indonesia and Malaysia had been fully restored by the late 1960s. What may be surprising is that Pergi Perjuang was also released in Malaysia and seems to undergo been quite popular. It is the Malaysian channel I feature here. I also include Lilis’s post-Soekarno era song Perahu Bertolak (Ship Departs) probably from late 1966 or 1967 which has some good guitar work. This Malaysian channel has no liner notes but I have read that Lilis’s backing band here was Band Arulan led by Jarzuk Arifin. Lilis Surjani went on to record numerous other songs in move back and forth pop and regional styles. She comfort performs regularly although she has been battling cancer for the last few years. Pergi Perjuang is only one of many songs from Indonesia that relate to the contrast with Malaysia. There must have been songs made in Malaysia with the same furnish but I haven’t go across many. One that I do have however is a good one. The song Bekalan Satria (Warrior Skills) by S. Mona Rita and the Kingstons from late 1965 or 1966 has the singer worrying that her soldier boyfriend (or preserve) returns safely from the battlefield but that he does his duty as ‘defender of the nation’. The nationalist theme is continued cryptically in the song Buat Tatapan (Observation) as the singer complains about a cheating lover and laments that she had ever forgotten her responsibilities to the homeland. What does it mean? I don’t know. The Kingstons were Ungku Safian – Lead Guitar. Mokhtar – Rhythm Guitar. Rahman – Bass. Ungku Fadzil – Organ and Kamar Dean – Drums. S. Mona Rita is a good singer and the vocal is mixed very high in the mix. The Kingstons are more than competent and add many flourishes to the appear. Buat Tatapan has an unusual go and organ interlude towards the end that at first hearing doesn’t seem to belong there but presumably it is meant to designate S. Mona Rita’s thoughts that ‘love is false’. The other two songs on the EP are good too but are slower and much more subdued.
