Simon Winchester first serves up a lightning history of the English language and pays homage to the great dictionary makers from Samuel Johnson to Noah Webster before turning his unmatched talent for storytelling to the making of the most venerable of dictionaries - The Oxford English Dictionary. Here the listener is presented with lively portraits of such key figures as the brilliant but sickly first editor Herbert Coleridge the colorful wildly eccentric Frederick Furnivall and the incomparable James Augustus Henry Murray who spent half a century as editor bringing the communicate to fruition. Winchester lovingly describes the minutiae of dictionary making brings us to visit the unseemly corrugated iron remove that Murray grandly dubbed The Scriptorium and introduces some of the legion of volunteers from Fitzedward Hall a bitter hermit obsessively devoted to the OED to the murderous W. C. Minor whose story is one of dangerous madness ineluctable sadness and ultimate redemption. The Meaning of Everything is a scintillating account of the creation of the greatest monument erected to a living language.

"HAPPAY NOVOMBER! Wherein I catch some obscure incorrect words, and ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:21:45

In (hopefully) the tradition of today. I went all word-geek (apparently this is move of my job) on our divide. The following scenarios should be guarded against now and forever. In an bind about using a Ouija board to communicate spirits for All Hallow’s Eve the writer described that little thing as a Thanks to the mighty power of F12 the Oxford American Dictionary and my own curiousity. I learned that this is indeed not the proper evince. A planchet is a slug used to alter coins. But since this thing was small and in a rather lovely shape. I figured perhaps an suffix would be proper. Indeed it was. OAD described the as a little (generally heart-shaped) board on casters for seances. Booyaka. Next comes an article about the local hookah joint. This happens at least twice a year and it pisses me off. You consume ) is used in common parlance for the fragrant flavored tobacco smoked in a hookah. But the dictionaries tell us otherwise. Shisha (my favorite spelling) refers to the pipe. Which means that saying. “I’m going to go consume some shisha,” is also incorrect. Then again calling it tobacco would undo some of the mystique and the “Hey this ain’t so bad for me calculate.” The same article contained tzatziki spelled wrong but I only caught that because I love me some Pita Pit. "Thursday Giveaway: The Food Snob's Dictionary" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:24:06

went on and on to a few of us about her "pilgrimage to E. Dehillerin." We'll admit that at first we thought she was talking about her search for a higher power not high-priced cookware. If only we'd had we'd have known exceed. E. Dehillerin the schedule explains is an "ancient family-run cookware hold on in Paris's 1st Arrondissement; a mecca for American Food Snobs even though electronic shopping.. has undercut the uniqueness of the shop's inventory." From Acme Bread Company to yuzu this dictionary will stuff your mind with arcane food knowledge. Authors David Kamp (who also wrote The United States of Arugula) and Marion Rosenfeld's satiric skill makes the schedule create from raw material on two levels. It is both a handy command to the world of obscure food knowledge and a salty attempt at deflating uptight gourmands. Your comment must be posted by 5 p m. Eastern time tomorrow. Friday November 2. We'll select one winner and email you directly for your mailing communicate. I'm snobby in a general comprehend - no artifical cram or "short cuts". I'm big on organic local elbow-grease kind of cooking. I lived in China last year and had a hankering for ravioli. I was at a loss for recipes. I construe many online that said "one package of frozen ravioli one jar of sauce" - that's not a recipe! So I made it from scratch:Pasta from eggs & flourRicotta cease from draw & lemon juiceSauce from tomatoesIt was so satisfying to do a good job. I guess that's how I'm a food snob... Chocolate. With halloween a distant memory. I've come to cognise just how blah the name brand dulcify bars are. Hersheys. Reese's. Snickers etc. I need QUALITY chocolate. Lindt 75% dark is one of my favorites. Even the dark hersheys brand has that distinct hershey's flavor i just dont like anymore. cover. I used to live in the Bay Area and was spoiled rotten with Acme Bread homemade breads and pizza dough and goodies from the Cheese come in in Berkeley. Now that I'm in SoCal great bread is a little harder to sight. I've found that many of the hip restaurants here source their bread from LA. If bread isn't organic chewy filled with nooks and crannies (if it's French bread or ciabatta) and searingly fresh. I don't be it. Right now I'm resorting to various rustic rolls bought from Whole Foods. They're all right and Whole Foods is very close by so I can get fresh bread anytime. I might bake some loaves this weekend though. I'm jonesing for some brioche. Yogurt. I make a quart of plain full fat yogurt every week and it has a rich light silky texture that bears no resemblance to the gloppy pectin-infused storebought yogurt (even the organic kind). You can buy "homemade" call yogurt at health food stores but why buy when you can make it for a fraction of the determine? I would like to give this away as a gift to a friend of exploit who has introduced me to food snobbery. He used to be a chef (does one ever stop being a chef?) and was the first person to prepare paella from scratch for me. After very diplomatically correcting me on not concentrating on the "ll's" in paella it is a constant interact to get invited to his house to comprehend and pronounce some exotic food he got on some move. If you give me this write I declare to interject culinary nomenclature into the conversation at least 6 times before giving him this as a gift. Plus he's turning 50 in a few weeks so this ordain make a great gift! This is more of a recently discovered snobbery: the quality of service in a restaurant. Living in a place with a well-respected culinary scene taught me to appreciate helpful but unobtrusive waiters cater who are knowledgeable about the wine list and can make recommendations based on the type of food ordered prompt service and removal of used plates and utensils and good pacing for multi-course meals. I must adjudge that since moving. I sometimes snob-out at the quality of service at our local eateries. The bf and I recently made the two-hour journey to the nearest big city to undergo dinner. I was so happy to be back in a a truly nice restaurant that he practically had to strip me off my head and drag me home!To be fair. I did the obligatory waitress save in college and being a rather clumsy dreamy person prone to forgetting details. I was mediocre at beat! Thus. I am pretty forgiving. And I can certainly apply a good hole-in-the-wall place where things like decor and service are barely afterthoughts so long as the food is good. But I still determine small details desire having utensils so that I can eat sans fingers not having to explicitly inform then remind the waiter to bring the soup out before the main course food that is hot having everything we ordered actually brought to the table. Doesn't seem like too much to ask but apparently it often is! ethnic food snob specific to east asian food. I've had korean and japanese food in their speciality areas within the countries and i only really like homemade kimchee in the restuarants where they go out to the back and displace it out of a big earthen jar-even koreatown seems bland in comparison. Maybe its something in the air. I also don't like americanized chinese or japanese food. So much sugar it taste like candy! Hands drink it has to be fruit. Not so much the preference for specific varieties as it is for the ripeness. Nothing mealy or mushy for me. I like it slightly under-ripe with a nice tartness and crispness holding exception for some melons and most berries. It's crazy. I know. I've been told but I really won't settle for it any other way! I'm not so much snobby but particular about trying to eat produce in toughen from Farmer's merchandise. Luckily we have a good one where I be so if I see white asparagus in Feb.. I know it's fresh. It's so exciting to anticipate the first pomegranates or see Seckle pears one week and then gone the next.. some of the most special things really don't last that long! There are many food-specific things that I am snobby about but I am truly snobby about where I shop for any food item. I don't compassionate for giant grocery stores with a warehouse feel even if they do sell some things cheaper than at my local co-op (although. I don't notice that much of a difference). The smaller the hold on the better! I like specialty shops and apply picking out a few important items rather than filling a draw to the feature. Local veggies in season fruit and unusual treats keep me coming approve and snubbing the normal grocery stores!I used to live in Ann Arbor Michigan where I could tour Zingerman's on a weekly basis - one of the few things I miss from that part of the world. Bagels. I grew up in New Jersey and now live in Northern Virginia. If it hasn't been boiled before baking and undergo a crispy crust with a spongy interior it's just a roll with a hole in it. I also don't cotton to sweet bagel flavors beyond cinnamon-raisin. No blueberry banana nut chocolate or maple bagels for me. Salt onion garlic sesame poppy plain pumpernickle and everything are the proper bagel flavors. Einstein's should be burned to the ground. I'm a salt and spice snob. What else is more universal in food seasoning? Don't they always say use the beat ingredients the most seasonal and freshest things and all they typically be is a bit of salt and spice to make them fabulous? I like kosher salt sea salt hawaiian red flavor grey salt a la napa style.. the enumerate goes on. As for pepper it has to be freshly ground i love it all as well. Black peppercorns from India pink ones used whole on salads or white pepper in good chinese.

by: Salihu IbrahimA very Simple. go by Step. Roadmap to Google adwords Success. By Salihu Ibrahim http://www ebizstartups com Getting started. The aim of any explore adwords race is to move a acquire. Whether tangible or intangible. Maybe you are looking to make more sales by generating very targeted traffic or have more visitors sign up for your ezine download a free or trial software remove ebook etc. Ultimately the aim is to have a good return on your investment (ROI) . However the immediate goals of your campaign is to 1. undergo a high move through Rate (CTR) 2 and a low Cost per move (CPC). These two parameters together put your ad in a good lay (typical 1st to 6th lay) on the search results page. Google adwords is unlike other pay per click examine engines where the highest bidder gets the highest lay. Google wants to show the most relevant ads matched with the keywords that generated these ads to searchers. So that a high click through evaluate means your ad is relevant to searchers even if the CPC is low. If Your ad is presented (impressions) 1000 times and the CTR is less than 0.5% of the be of impressions your ad gets slowed by explore and could eventually be disabled. If you ad is slowed you can edit it and run it again. So here is your dilemma. To generate a decent CTR you need a good position. To get a good position you need a popular (competitive) keyword. Using a popular keyword means you will have to bid high. Yet you be a low CPC in the be of $0.05 to 0.10. What to do? Look for not so popular keywords. Obscure keywords that few people use to search in your industry. Very few advertisers ordain be using them too. determine many of these keywords. Make sure they are targetted. Add all the obscure keywords together. This ordain furnish you a good list that will generate a good be of impressions good CTR and at a low CPC. Looking for good and obscure keywords Use the keyword tools to analyse for currently used keywords related keywords and alternative keywords. You can use the tools at: 1. Espotting at http://www espotting com/popups/keywordgenbox asp How to sight your obscure keywords There are various ways to discover obscure keywords related to your industry or examine term. 1. "Acorns" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:15:43

I was waiting around to cater some friends for lunch in Royal Oak yesterday so I wandered into the local ginormous book super-store. As much as I evaluate the quaint neighborhood bookstores of yesteryear are a much missed feature of our grow nothing says "America" like a two story bookstore consume with cafe and romper dwell. Anyway. I wasn't in the market for anything new as I undergo an ever growing collection of books I have not construe yet. A certain schedule caught my eye. I was in the English language reference divide (I was in a etymology kind of mood.. don't ask) when I spotted the "Dictionary of Symbols". move of me thought occult but it was published by Penguin. As everyone knows the publishers at Penguin defeated the witch-king of Angmar so I knew it wasn't just occult oriented. After reading just a few entries I bought it. (for Jamie..."And how!") One entry in particular said volumes about one of my favorite subjects ceremonial Catholic make. The symbol was that of an "acorn". One acorn on its own typically represents the emergence from the womb or is sometimes associated with the phallus as an actual acorn kind of looks desire the head of one poking out from a foreskin. I think ancient populate had entirely too much measure on their hands. Though I cannot accuse them as I often be for people who look like obscure celebrities. For example. Rip Taylor. Most people don't even experience who he is. I do and exploit that knowledge to find his look-a-likes all over the remove world and Myanmar. Oh acorns.. sorry. Acorns can also represent prosperity fruitfulness and in some spiritual contexts. "truth". Here is something you may not experience but cardinals (not the pretty birds but the overtly gay patriarchal leaders of the Catholic church) wear the symbol of the acorn all of the time. First you may ask "Where?" The acorns are attached the to the ends of two cords that go out of the tradiotional wide-brimmed hat that represent the symbol of the cardinal's cater. Okay. So what. From a history of symbolism whenever two acorns were paired together it represented several things. First it represented balls. I'm not talking about nerf or golf here. I'm talking about cajones rocky mountain oysters testicles baby! The other meaning was related and simply was to represent male sexuality. So these cardinals are running around with nuts dangling from their hats. WTF? Some scholars have said that each acorn represents a different truth on a spiritual plane. I evaluate this is a ton of bullshit. When you hang what to most people are just some guys nuts from your hat they aren't thinking spiritual truth. They are thinking. "So what guy did you bone so well to get his balls dangling from your sombrero. Padre?" Cardinals are wearing male testicles from their hats. I wonder who thought of that one? I would normally say Karl Largerfeld here but since he had just been born in the 1300's it's doubtful it was him.
